The literacy committee has worked hard this year to put together an Operational Plan to create an English teaching and learning guide for Harrisdale Primary. In K – 2 children are following a synthetic phonics program ‘Letters and Sounds’. In years 2 – 6 children are following the spelling program ‘Words Their Way’ which is a language based platform to support early spelling. All teachers follow the ‘Harrisdale Lesson Proforma’ and the WA Curriculum Guidelines to implement effective Literacy lessons.
A home reading scheme has been set up for children to access. All children have been allocated an Oxford Literacy login, which allows them continuous access to a range of appropriately leveled reading books. These books are not meant to be a challenging task. They have been set by the teacher to help children consolidate what they have learnt in class and to promote the enjoyment of reading. In K – 2 children also have the option to log into ‘BugClub’, an interactive home reading system.
